If you grew up on Streets of Rage or Final Fight and still get the itch for a good old-fashioned brawler, War Dogs: Red’s Return is aimed squarely at you. It’s a small, budget-priced game, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than a love letter to that genre which, depending on what you’re looking for, is either exactly what you want or a reason to look elsewhere.

The Setup

The world here has been through a plague that nearly ended humanity, and the survivors leaned on genetic engineering just to keep going. What’s left of society is split in two: a polished, tech-heavy center, and the rundown suburbs where outcasts live under the thumb of whichever gang controls their block.

You play Red, a fighter who’s been away for a year and comes home to find his old neighborhood torn apart by gang violence. He links back up with old friends and starts digging into who’s actually responsible for the chaos — and that’s the story hook for this first chapter.

That’s an important detail: this is part one of an ongoing saga. The developer has been upfront that more levels are planned down the line, so don’t go in expecting a complete, self-contained story.

How It Plays

Combat is built the way you’d expect from a 2.5D retro brawler — you move along a plane, enemies swarm in from the sides, and you fight your way through. Punches and kicks link into combos, and when you need to break out of a tough spot, you’ve got access to special techniques called Breaks that can shift momentum in your favor.

Each level throws a mix of regular enemies and tougher bosses at you, and there’s a customization layer on top — cosmetics and implants you can buy and equip to tweak how Red looks and plays. On top of the main story, there’s a Mission Mode with daily challenge levels that reward good performance with rarer loot, which gives you a reason to come back even after you’ve cleared the story content.

Where It Delivers

The combat feels true to the genre it’s copying — if you know what a good beat ’em up should feel like, the combo system and Breaks give you enough to work with. The file size is tiny at 5 GB, it runs fine on both Switch and Switch 2, and the daily missions add some replay value that a lot of games this size skip entirely.

What to Know Before You Buy

This is only the first part of Red’s story, so temper your expectations around length and closure. Language support is limited to English and Brazilian Portuguese, so if you need other language options, this isn’t for you. It’s also strictly single-player — no co-op, no multiplayer, which is worth knowing since a lot of classic brawlers built their reputation on couch co-op.

Bottom Line

If you want a short, honest throwback to the beat ’em up genre and you’re fine with the story continuing in future updates, this is a solid, low-risk pick. If you’re expecting a full campaign or any kind of multiplayer, this isn’t the game for that.
